Karmann gears up for the North American market

More customers from the automotive industry opt for Human Solutions product performance and reliability. Karmann, the Full Service Vehicle Supplier, works as a cabriolet specialist for many large car manufacturers.

Kaiserslautern, 24. Mai 2006 – As one of the first leading suppliers to the automotive industry, the Wilhelm Karmann GmbH of Osnabrück, Germany has opted to use the electronic Beltfit Test Device (eBTD). This will add a decisive safety component to the RAMSIS Human Solutions ergonomics system which the Karmann company has now been using in Osnabrück for the past few years. Karmann engineers will start using the eBTD immediately to verify seat belt routing in compliance with Canadian government regulations. Belt routing certification by means of BTD or eBTD will be required in future for the authorization approval of cars on the Canadian market.

The Tier 0,5 Supplier Karmann designs and manufactures specific modules and complete vehicles for international car manufacturers - the company is also highly regarded in the trade as being specialists for vehicle roof systems. Karmann-built models include all the VW cabriolets in the Beetle and Golf ranges, as well as those of Audi and Mercedes.

RAMSIS has established itself as the standard in vehicle development: More than 70% of all car manufacturers worldwide use the RAMSIS CAD solution (computer-supported, mathematical-anthropological system for vehicle occupant simulation) in the design process of vehicle interiors. In ergonomic design, the analysis of an extremely wide range of postures and movement sequences is carried out with the aid of virtual human beings.

One of Karmann's specialties is the entire range of virtual product development - here the company's approach is to carry out all analyses and simulations as early as possible, starting at the concept planning phase. For us, the use of the eBTD module was simply a logical step in the completion of our design strategy. The background: in Canada, every vehicle model for which an authorization application is made must include very specific guidelines developed by the Canadian Ministry of Transport. Since many vehicles later sold in the USA are imported via Canada for tax reasons, the result of the inspection is all-important for every car manufacturer. The eBTD system will make life considerably easier for us. In each of our manufacturing stages, we make certain that all guidelines are strictly adhered to. Should an exception occur, the error can be immediately corrected per computer - economically.
