From virtual try-on to customized manufacture

For the first time, Human Solutions presents the Virtual Mirror at the IMB Cooperation project with the German Ministry of Research presents the current results -

Kaiserslautern / Cologne, 08 May 2003 – At the IMB in Cologne, from the 6th through the 10th of May 2003, Human Solutions will present its solutions for the electronic capture and simulation of human beings. One of these solutions is the “Virtual Mirror”, a cooperation project started in 2001 with the German Ministry of Research. Within the framework of this project, Human Solutions, working with several partners from diverse sectors, has developed a technology that links customized clothing manufacture with the potential of E-Commerce.

Body measurement takes place by means of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies, in the form of a 3D body scanner. Utilizing this information, the Human Solutions system creates a digitalized CAD model. The customer then 'tries on' various garments, using his (or her) digital twin - and the simulation is not only extremely realistic, it is three-dimensional and runs in realtime. The customer can see his future selections; the lines of the fabric and how it drapes, how the customized suit fits and just what effect the color has.

Virtual Reality in a real sales department

Virtual shops for textiles and clothing - this is the objective we had in mind when we created the “Virtual Mirror”. In real-world retail stores, the 3D body scanner electronically captures the body surfaces of the customer and automatically calculates the corresponding body measurements. The linking of the customer's preferences (model type, color, accessories, etc.), to the body measurement data activates the virtual construction process: The computer creates CAD models of the desired items of clothing in which the figurine of the customer is then clothed. The customer can see the results from all angles on a life-size display, the “Virtual Mirror”. Changes can be carried out at this stage - fit, accessories, colors, etc. When the customer has made his final choices, the computer generates the order for customized clothing manufacture and transmits it to the production facility.

The Virtual Shop in the Internet

The customer can also use the scan data from the shop to purchase clothing on the Internet: He simply downloads his own figurine on to his computer and starts trying on garments of his choice. The graphical imagery is matched to his computer's capabilities. When the customer has selected an item, he then can order it on the Internet.

The “Virtual Mirror” opens up new perspectives

Customers, retailers and manufacturers alike profit from this new VR technology. Unlike previous Internet clothing purchases he has made, the customer knows that the products he ordered will exactly match his requirements this time and fit him perfectly. “With the ‘Virtual Mirror’ we have succeeded in matching the needs and requirements of the clothing market. Wrong orders and unnecessary warehousing will be drastically reduced”, explained Dr. Andreas Seidl, Managing Director of Human Solutions. “Manufacturers can now optimize and adapt their collections to actual market needs, thanks to the acquired customer data - and that in turn means competitive advantages and costs savings”.
