The results of the Size NorthAmerica series measurement are available in the database for RAMSIS Standalone NextGen – the digital human model can now be optimally used for ergonomic analyses of the American market. Size NorthAmerica offers the latest representative body dimension data of the population in the USA and Canada.

Around 14,000 people were measured in the USA and a total of more than 55,000 body scans were collected. The available body dimension data is divided into nine age groups, four regions and five ethnic groups. Body height ranges from 99 to 203.9 centimetres, weight from 17.7 to 229.7 kilograms. Sociodemographic data were also collected in the course of the study.

Compared with the US NHANES III study from 1990, accelerated to 2008, the average changes are as follows:

Women USA total

Men USA total

Body height

+ 1.1 cm

+ 1.0 cm

Chest circumference

+ 4.8 cm

+ 4.4 cm

Waist circumference

+ 2.5 cm

+ 5.0 cm

Hip circumference

+ 9.2 cm

+ 6.6 cm

Average BMI alarmingly high

However, even more clearly than the pure body measurements, another value shows how much the population of the USA has changed – the Body Mass Index (BMI). It is the highest average value ever determined in a series measurement and proves that the proportion of overweight people in the USA is significantly higher than in other nations: more than half of the adult population is too heavy! Particularly challenging for the industry: The spectrum of different BMIs is very large in the USA and is distributed differently from region to region – for example, the BMI in the western USA is significantly lower than in the Midwest.

The end of October saw our annual RAMSIS User Conference (RUC) take place in Dresden for the first time. The focus this year was on electromobility and the question of how it affects ergonomics in the vehicle and one of the highlights was a visit to the Volkswagen Transparent Factory.

Dr. Stefan Bratzel kicked off the Conference this year with a keynote lecture on the opportunities provided by electric mobility and the challenges involved. During the subsequent panel discussion, it became clear that there are still many unanswered questions, mainly concerning the necessary infrastructure and battery technology. However, a visit to the Volkswagen Transparent Factory with test drives afterwards showed what is already possible today. Our conclusion? Ergonomics will play a role in the further development of electric mobility, especially when it comes to new mobility concepts such as car sharing – because when many different people share vehicles, the interior design of these vehicles has to be more flexible.

Once again, the RUC provided numerous insights into our customers’ and partners’ current RAMSIS projects, plus those of our own team. One important topic for Human Solutions is the expansion of our own portfolio to include “Ergonomics as a service”, since we considerably expanded our consulting services last year. With the presentation of the RAMSIS Excellence Award, Human Solutions honored two young scientists for their research in 2019.

“The RUC was once again an important source of inspiration for us, says Anton Preiß, Director of Ergonomics. “As a service provider, we want to help our customers with their challenges in the best possible way. At the RUC we get a real insight into current projects and we also discuss issues much more intensively than we can during appointments in everyday life. We’re already looking forward to next year!”

At this year’s RAMSIS User Conference (RUC), Human Solutions once again presented the RAMSIS Excellence Award to young scientists for their outstanding scientific work in ergonomics and vehicle interior design.

This year, two RAMSIS Excellence Awards were presented for master’s theses, each endowed with prize money of €500. Steffen Schynoll received the award for his thesis entitled, the “Evaluation of a Variable Ergonomics Test Bench for Trucks”, which he compiled in the Ergonomics Department at the Technical University of Munich. Luka Thaler from the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences (Rhein-Ahr Campus Remagen) received the award for his work entitled, “Spinal column and pelvis position in the driving position of passenger cars – a development of anthropometric and cross-vehicle posture schemes for computer-aided occupant simulation.” This thesis completed his studies in sports medicine technology.

The focus at the RUC is on the exchange of information about working with RAMSIS. Ergonomics experts from companies report on their projects and Human Solutions employees present their latest developments, all of which adapt the digital manikin to master an increasing number of new requirements. The RAMSIS Excellence Award combines research and practice in the field of ergonomics and shows the tasks with which university students are confronted.

Dassault Systèmes and Human Solutions will extend their cooperation to provide vehicle designers with a best in class tool for ergonomic analysis – the Human Solutions digital human model RAMSIS will be accessible on top of the Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

Dassault Systèmes and Human Solutions have entered into a partnership to integrate RAMSIS into the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. 3DEXPERIENCE is a business experience platform for all Dassault Systèmes software solutions.

Thanks to the integration of RAMSIS in 3DEXPERIENCE, users can access the RAMSIS manikin – and this means that importing and exporting data is no longer necessary and work steps can be carried out more quickly and easily. This means that users of the platform can perform their ergonomic analyses for vehicle design in the familiar, proven systems and solutions of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform based on the latest geometry, without having to exchange data with an additional stand-alone application. The integration will also involve RAMSIS being used in CATIA, a program for the development of construction machinery and commercial vehicles. Designers and Engineers will benefit from the unique value of the integrated CATIA Modeling environment to design, evaluate and validate the best experience for their consumers.

The RAMSIS version that will be integrated into the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is RAMSIS NextGen, which provides more flexibility, efficiency and an outstanding representation of the market. The user also gets results faster, thanks to the parallel observation of several RAMSIS models. Persons with different body shapes and sizes, for example, can easily be virtually placed in the vehicle interior to check their view from the vehicle, to check the belt routing and to determine if they can access various components in the vehicle. The development of the models’ body shapes was based on real, three-dimensional scans.

KAI: AI-based assistant for interior development

KAI unites the leading and internationally operating German companies and research institutions in the field of vehicle interiors, ergonomics and artificial intelligence to support vehicle developers in their work to design the interior of tomorrow.

The market launch of highly automated driving changes the automobile with lasting effects. A central prerequisite for a commercially successful launch of highly automated driving is, in addition to its technical realisation, the creation of a high level of price acceptance and willingness to pay from a customer’s perspective. By transferring the responsibility of driving to the car new vehicle and interior concepts are demanded by transformed customer expectations. Even with current cars the interior design has a high significance as an important purchase criterion. By introducing highly automated driving functions and accordingly arising non driving related activities (NDRA) the interior is going to be an even stronger purchase criterion for customers in the future. This introduces additional requirements into the product development process (PDP) that even today is of high complexity. Accordingly, strategies to evaluate new interior concepts are needed.

Methods from the field of artificial intelligence (AI) have a potential to contribute positively by supporting the developers in their decision making in terms of a “next best action” (NBA) approach. In automotive research and development (R&D) AI methods are currently used to a small extent. However, they are most powerful tools especially for the development of disruptive vehicle interiors where they can boost both development efficiency and quality for user centred solutions.

The KAI project (AI-based assistant for interior development) is dedicated to the development of AI-tools that accompany the PDP and assist developers during the phases of requirements determination, design and evaluation for automotive interiors. KAI supports all parties involved in the PDP at several process stages and contributes to the objectification of requirements. The geometrical design is going to be accelerated by an automated design tool using parametric modelling. KAI is going to pre-evaluate interior concepts at an early stage regarding technical and human-centred evaluation criteria. All measures combined reduce the time needed for development while simultaneously increasing product quality. Accordingly, KAI is going to answer vital questions of novel user scenarios for future interiors. This lays the basis for customer relevant differentiating factors.

The joint research project KAI is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy within the framework of the program "Neue Fahrzeug- und Systemtechnologien".

A few months ago, Human Solutions passed the ISO 9001:2015 certification process successfully for the first time. At the beginning of July, the German Technical Inspection Authority (TÜV) Rheinland Cert GmbH sent us a communication: “Your company has proven that it meets the requirements of an effective management system,” was the announcement that accompanied the certification process.

Both nationally and internationally, the quality management standard ISO 9001:2015 is the most widespread standard in quality management (QM). It defines the minimum requirements for the quality management system (QMS) that must be implemented in order to meet customer requirements and other important standards for product and service quality. Anton Preiß, Director of Ergonomics at Human Solutions, says, “We’ve documented and supplemented our processes with the help of ‘turtles’. These describe the tasks that must be performed in each process step and the associated marginal conditions, such as the resources that are necessary in order to achieve the relevant result.” The functionality of the management system was randomly checked by a selected audit team. Particular attention was paid to the conformity of the workflows with the standard requirements and the descriptions in the management system documentation. The special features of the entrepreneurial activities and the applicable legal and regulatory requirements, as well as other higher-level documents were also addressed.

The scope of the ISO 9001:2015 covers the development and sale of our digital manikin RAMSIS and its vehicle-specific modules, services for the RAMSIS manikin and the modules and RAMSIS-related services and ergonomic consulting.

DELFIN – Dynamic Evaluation of Vehicle Occupants

Digital product development in the automotive industry includes the implementation of ergonomic requirements. Digital manikins are used for the design and evaluation of the vehicle interior. During the development of many vehicle types, the ergonomic focus is also on the design of the entire cabin (e.g. vehicle ingress, operating procedures). Since the occupants interact dynamically with the vehicle, corresponding motion studies must be carried out to ensure that the ergonomics will provide safety and comfort. To date, these studies have been carried out on time-consuming and cost-intensive physical models of the cabin with test persons – so a digital solution is needed.

To acquire ergonomic information at an early stage, we require a technology that can predict movements and evaluate occupants on/in the vehicle model. The DELFIN project implements the technology for the simulation of vehicle occupant movements into the RAMSIS digital manikin. The movements of the occupants in a vehicle environment will be calculated automatically with the help of a library of measured movements. Users will then be able to interactively manipulate and assemble them.

The technology for movement prognosis and evaluation should become generally usable in vehicle development (e.g. cars, trucks, airplanes & agricultural and construction machinery) and validated in various truck & car applications during the life of the project.

The joint project DELFIN is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research within the framework of the ‘KMU-innovativ’ program. Launched on May 1, 2019, the program will run until April 30, 2022.

The RAMSIS User Conference will take place in Dresden on October 29 and 30. The programme for the RUC is still being finalised, but one thing is already clear – a comprehensive overview of the latest RAMSIS developments will be presented to the audience, and we’ll also be covering one of the dominant topics of the industry – electromobility. Will this topic of the future also influence vehicle ergonomics? How will electromobility change our road traffic and our own habits? We want to find answers to questions like these at the RUC. We’ll also be visiting Volkswagen’s ‘Gläserne Manufaktur’ in Dresden to experience electromobility live.

INSAA: Passenger simulation in automated automobiles

With the increasing development of automation in vehicles, a paradigm shift is currently taking place in interior design due to the changed role of the driver – relieved of the primary driving task for a large part of the time, he or she can turn to non-driving-related activities. New concepts for vehicle interiors are currently being developed, which entail new designs for human-machine interaction. Analogous to classical vehicle development, the digital ergonomic validation of these concepts is absolutely necessary for the efficiency of the development process – but this is currently not possible, since the underlying digital manikins are only optimized for the primary driving task in conventional vehicle concepts.

The INSAA project is aimed at expanding the capabilities of RAMSIS. Specifically: postures for various tasks in the automated vehicle will be calculated from which the movement into the driver’s posture will be simulated and evaluated with regard to the movement timeframe. In a test setup, the real occupant behaviour is measured in a contact-free procedure. Models for non-driving activities and transfer processes are created and integrated into the RAMSIS simulation environment. The solution approach will be validated and optimized using case studies from the industry.

The INSAA joint project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the “KMU-innovativ” (SME-innovative) program.

We are always on the move, no matter where we are – but our freedom of movement is severely restricted in narrow spaces, such as in a vehicle. This is why the interior design of a vehicle should be matched to our usual movement sequences. It must also address ergonomic requirements – and that is particularly important when it comes to safety-related movements that require a rapid and undisturbed reaction.

The necessary movement studies for protecting ergonomics are being physically completed at the time of writing. To date, these tests have been carried out using complex models of the cabin with test persons, but procedures like this are both time-consuming and cost-intensive – so a digital solution has to be found. Human Solutions aims to achieve this with the DELFIN research project (Dynamic Evaluation of Vehicle Passengers), which will expand the functionality of the company’s RAMSIS digital manikin, enabling it to perform dynamic analyses.

The Advanced Realtime Tracking Company is also involved in the DELFIN research project, during which it will continue to develop its existing motion capture systems to combine comfort, minimize rework and deliver maximum precision, eventually offering the ergonomics market a trailblazing level of motion capture quality. The Institute of Mechatronics at Chemnitz University of Technology will also use this system to collect necessary movement data, which will be used in turn by the Chair of Ergonomics at the Munich University of Technology to create the relevant evaluation models.

The ultimate aim of the project is to implement a technology for predicting and evaluating the movements of vehicle occupants into the digital manikin RAMSIS. Using a library of measured movements, RAMSIS users will then be able to automatically calculate vehicle occupants’ movements and interactively manipulate and assemble them.

This technology will be used in the development of cars, trucks, airplanes and agricultural & construction machinery, then validated in various truck & car applications during the project.

The joint project DELFIN is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research within the framework of the “KMU-innovativ” program. Launched on May 1, 2019, it will run until April 30, 2022.

MOSIM: Modular simulation of realistic human movements for an end-to-end digital process chain

The MOSIM project is mainly aimed at enabling a holistic analysis of human movements by creating a modular simulation framework. In particular, interoperable concepts and approaches are to be developed that clearly reflect the realism of software for simulating human motion. At the same time, the effort involved in manual preparation and post-processing should be drastically reduced or automated by artificial intelligence and decision-making methods.

An approach like this increases the market potential of human simulation in several areas, and this is why MOSIM is tackling seven heterogeneous use cases to demonstrate the potential of the generic framework. The German consortium is planning to develop two independent demonstrators which will underscore the diverse usage possibilities of the generic approach.

The joint project MOSIM is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The security of the data that Human Solutions customers make available for our work is of great importance to us – and we have also been awarded the TISAX certificate for our careful handling of such data.

TISAX stands for Trusted Information Security Assessment Exchange. It is a standard for information security defined by the automotive industry. Many automobile manufacturers and German automotive industry suppliers have increasingly been demanding current TISAX certification from their business partners since 2017.

Human Solutions has passed the test procedure for TISAX. 56 test criteria and requirements in accordance with the VDA ISA catalog were examined in detail by the Rheinland i-sec company for the German Technical Inspection Authority. The certificate was issued in spring 2019 for our Aschheim site, where we provide ergonomic services for an OEM. It will remain valid for three years, after which it will be reissued following an audit.

China is the largest car market in the world – and it’s beginning to change from a sellers’ to a buyers’ market, because even established brands are being challenged to prove their quality. A large number of Chinese OEMs now rely on RAMSIS – and Human Solutions has been represented by its reliable service partner Beijing Jiangda Technology in China for more than ten years now.

Requirements in China’s car market differ from those in Germany or the USA, both in terms of socio-economic factors and the anthropometric characteristics of the vehicle occupants. Even with identical body heights, the proportions of East Asians and Europeans differ considerably. The torsos of East Asians are longer, but their legs are substantially shorter than those of Europeans. In vehicle interior design, this not only affects visual comfort, but also factors for safe operation, such as when pedals have to be reached easily.

Thanks to relevant RAMSIS test collective samples, Chinese customers’ requirements can be simulated in the early development phase. Many OEMs have chosen the digital manikin, because it provides significant support for the product development process, helping to achieve the desired ergonomic quality quickly and cost-effectively.

Beijing Jiangda Technology has represented Human Solutions in China since 2005. The partner company combines professional services with solidly-based technological competence. Its customers are mainly from the automotive, aviation and mechanical engineering industries. “The cooperation with our colleagues from Beijing Jiangda is extremely effective and solution-oriented. RAMSIS users in China are given the best possible support and this is also reflected in the increasing usage skills of our customers and the constant number of new project enquiries,” says Susanne Kiel, Senior Manager Partner Sales at Human Solutions. More than 40 companies in China now use RAMSIS for their design processes – and this trend is on the rise.

Measurements in the USA have been completed, now it’s the turn of Canada – and all the results of the Size NorthAmerica serial measurement survey should be available by the end of 2019. The survey is being carried out by Human Solutions of North America and Avalution GmbH. The acquired data is specially processed to match the requirements of the automotive industry.

Size NorthAmerica is the most extensive measurement survey project that has ever been carried out on the North American continent – around 18,000 people in total will have been measured with 3D body scanners by project completion. The test persons are scanned in different postures, wearing their underwear. The acquired data is stored anonymously and subsequently processed for the demands of the automotive and apparel industries. The socio-demographic data of the test subjects is also acquired.

Why is this survey taking place?

Body dimensions change over years – and the precise knowledge of human body shapes is indispensable, especially for the development of vehicles and apparel. The body measurements and proportions of the North American population have changed considerably in recent decades, as has the demographic structure of the USA and Canada. The anthropometric data and the standard sizetables that are currently available are based on older data, so they are outdated and can only help the apparel industry in a limited way. Decades of gradual changes have not been taken into account, so detailed, up-to-date information on specific target groups and market shares is simply not available. Size NorthAmerica is recording and documenting the body dimension changes that have occurred during the past decades – and this means that accurate, instructive and up-to-date information will soon be made available for the automotive industry’s product development in terms of safety, handling and comfort.

Parents attach enormous importance to the safety of their children in the vehicle – so when they buy a particular car seat for their child, that’s a real sign of trust in the manufacturer. Until recently, however, the existing belt systems in the vehicle have really been put to the test by children’s seats, but RAMSIS now makes it possible to examine the interaction between the vehicle’s belt system and various child seat models.

RAMSIS can be used to make space forecasts for child seats, for example, to check the suitability of the existing belt system for securing the seat and to test the belt routing over the child in the seat. The simulation works in four simple steps: The child’s seat is loaded from the library and positioned in the vehicle, the RAMSIS child model is placed in the seat and the belt routing is then calculated over the seat and over the model.

The RAMSIS ‘Child Seat’ module is a customer-specific platform that can be individually expanded by child seat models and integrated into RAMSIS as required by the user. RAMSIS also has Q dummies for 6 and 10 year-old children in the child seat.

The RAMSIS Child Seat module was developed in cooperation with Daimler and Britax Römer, the child seat manufacturer. The Britax Römer child seat library is approved for the majority of German OEMs. If you have any questions, please contact our sales department!

Standards define the visual values for vehicles. Testing for compliance with these standards is carried out using mirrors and cameras, while driving or maneuvering. The limit values of the individual standards and the compliance testing procedures are strictly regulated, but if a vehicle is developed in compliance with standards right from the outset, this will save considerable time and reduce costs.

Visual standards apply right around the vehicle – to the front, to the sides and to the rear. Structures like cables, lifting platforms, water tanks and wide fenders, bodywork & exhaust systems can interfere with vision, endangering compliance with standards. RAMSIS displays the visual fields geometrically in the CAD model, facilitating standard-compliant development by performing checks and corrections on the digital vehicle model. RAMSIS visual standards contain a great number of common visual standards.

RAMSIS simulates the real visual field in the CAD model of the vehicle – including all the relevant attachments. Our software generates the standard visual field geometrically based on the driver’s position and displays it in a three-dimensional environment.

The limit values of the standard and all the corresponding analysis methods are stored in RAMSIS, so the results can always be perfectly replicated, even on different versions of vehicles – and that simply cannot be done on a physical test stand.

All that has to be added is the specific vehicle data, such as vehicle geometry, movement possibilities, dimensions of the mirror & cameras, plus the position of the seat if required – and if the standard criteria are to be tightened up, users can change the values on request.

Autonomous driving is causing a major stir in the automotive industry – and we at Human Solutions are asking ourselves what will the driver actually do if the vehicle is driving itself? How will changes in driver activity affect vehicle interiors, safety and comfort?

Our research project INSAA (Occupant Simulation in Automated Automobiles) was launched on July 1, 2018 with the aim of further developing the RAMSIS digital human model to meet the requirements of automated driving for motorists. “In the vehicle industry, the classic driver’s seat is currently being optimized for the ergonomic performance of the driving task, primarily with the aid of digital manikins,” says Project Coordinator Dr. Hans-Joachim Wirsching of Human Solutions. “Automated driving means that the driver can turn his attention to other activities. This will also change the vehicle interior – and these changes will also have to address ergonomic issues.”

The functions and capabilities of existing digital manikins must be expanded to answer questions like these and Human Solutions GmbH, Simi Reality Motion Systems GmbH and the Chair of Ergonomics at the Technical University of Munich are researching this together. The joint project will run for 3 years. INSAA is funded by the SME innovativ (ICT) funding measure of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).

RAMSIS, the digital manikin by Human Solutions, has been used for the ergonomic design of vehicle interiors for the past 30 years – and it has so far been geared towards the primary driving task in conventional vehicle concepts, with the main focus on comfort issues, followed by safety aspects like belt routing and visual field analyses. The INSAA project is aimed at expanding the capabilities of RAMSIS. In the future, the postures and movements of RAMSIS will also include activities outside the vehicle, such working with a tablet. To achieve this, project partner Simi Reality Motion Systems will be carrying out tests during which real occupant behavior is recorded with several cameras and measured in a contact-free procedure. The results will then be transferred to RAMSIS.

The Deep Orange program at Clemson University in South Carolina/USA enables students to develop a vehicle prototype within two years. It’s a unique program that accompanies the students from the initial idea to the finished vehicle. Ergonomic comfort and safety are tested using RAMSIS in Catia V5.

All Automotive Engineering students have the opportunity to participate in the Deep Orange program. There are five different student teams: Powertrain, Body, Interior, Body-in-White and Project Management. The selection process also prepares students for their future occupations, because they have to apply for Deep Orange just as they would for a real job. “The students all understand the commitment they’re making. We can assess their interest realistically”, says Professor Johnell Brooks in an interview with our ‘KomfortZone’ customer magazine. Sponsors support the projects and usually provide a rough orientation of what should be developed – an ‘urban commercial vehicle’, for instance. One special result achieved during one implementation timeframe was the development of a 3+3 seating concept in a hybrid sports car.

RAMSIS is used intensively for project work, for visual analysis, for example, and for the accessibility of instruments. “RAMSIS has shown our teams a clear way to test their concepts,” says Brooks. It has proved to be an absolute winner for the outstanding Clemson University project, which has a clear advantage over the competition for the best jobs in the automotive industry.

Ergonomic simulation so design works for every body

For over twenty years Human Solutions has developed the world’s largest database of anthropometric data captured by 3D body scanners. These “Avatars” are stored in Avalutions database. Our ergonomic software (RAMSIS) gives vehicle and aerospace designers the ability to place these avatars into virtual simulations of their vehicle design so they can finesse the comfort and safety for people of different sizes and genders. Ergonomic engineers test the usability of critical operating controls and ensure a clear 360 degree field of vision without requiring the operator to move out of position. The software also has modules that can be used in the design of trains, buses, trucks, industrial machinery, airplanes, agriculture and military vehicles.

Research developments are advancing, industry requirements are changing, and RAMSIS itself is also moving on. The result is a wide-ranging theme park through which we will move, true to the motto „RAMSIS in Motion“, and devote ourselves to various questions such as:
How do visual signals affect motion sickness? How can RAMSIS move into and within the vehicle? How can RAMSIS be used to address a more inclusive and diverse target group?
We want to explore these and many other questions together with you and are looking forward to welcoming you in Ludwigsburg!

START

The official program starts on September 26 at 9:00 a.m. at the nestor Hotel in Ludwigsburg.

RAMSIS is the world’s leading ergonomics tool for the automotive industry when it comes to customizing the interior of vehicles to match the requirements of the driver and passengers as closely as possible.

“3DEXPERIENCE is one of the leading software solutions for vehicle design. Thanks to the integration of RAMSIS NextGen, we can now provide designers with a tool which simplifies the addressing of ergonomic requirements in the design of vehicle interiors”, says Anton Preiss, Director of Ergonomics at Human Solutions.

In practice, this means that users of the platform can perform their ergonomic analyses for vehicle design in the familiar, proven systems and solutions of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform based on the latest geometry, without having to exchange data with an additional stand-alone application. The integration will also involve RAMSIS being used in CATIA, the leading solution for all design and engineering activities, and more particularly in the Transportation and Mobility industry.

Human Solutions will participate in the Eurosatory trade fair in Paris from June 11 to 15, 2018 as part of a joint German booth. The company will present the RAMSIS Defense ergonomic software solution and a digitalized solution approach for military clothing using 3D body scanners.

Vehicles used for military purposes have special ergonomic requirements. Certain items of clothing or equipment, for example, must be taken into account when persons enter or exit the vehicle, or a specific space must be reserved for their transport. Vehicle designers can use the RAMSIS digital manikin for this – it provides important information for optimal ergonomic interior design as early as the development phase. The RAMSIS Defense module addresses the special requirements of the military and Human Solutions will be presenting it at the Paris show.

Simulation of the entry and exit wearing combat gear

“The module has an extensive library of military items and equipment,” says Anton Preiss, Director Mobility at Human Solutions. “Our digital manikin can be equipped with these items to simulate vehicle entry and exit in full combat gear.”

Digitalizing and optimizing the garment process

The Human Solutions trade fair team will also be taking along a fashion sector solution: “We have used our know-how in 3D body scanning and corporate fashion to digitalize the process of the initial

clothing process of military personnel. Instead of a recruit being assigned a size visually, he is measured by our body scanner when he enters the army – and he then receives a size recommendation for each individual item of clothing,” explains Preiss. “The collected body dimension data can then be re-used to determine the requirements of individual sizes more precisely, for instance.”

The following terms and conditions apply to offers and other agreements for goods and services from Humanetics Digital Europe GmbH.

1      Scope of Application

1.1   These terms and conditions apply exclusively. Different or conflicting terms shall not be accepted unless we have expressly agreed to them in writing.

1.2   These terms and conditions also apply to all future transactions between the Parties, even if we carry out delivery while aware of differing or conflicting terms and conditions.

1.3   These terms apply only to entrepreneurs and legal entities of public law.

2      Conclusion of the Agreement

2.1   Our offers are non-binding, unless an offer is designated as binding in writing.

2.2   A legally binding relationship can only become effective through a mutually signed contract or by the Customer’s order and written confirmation from us, and also through the fact that we are starting (or have started) the performance of the contractual services. The prices and conditions of the signed contract or written order confirmation shall apply.

2.3   Insofar as the order constitutes an offer within the meaning of § 145 BGB (German legal code), we shall be entitled to accept such offer within a period of two weeks.

3      Subject of the Agreement

3.1   If the subject of the Agreement is software and/or hardware, product descriptions and representations in test programs are only descriptions of services, not guarantees. In order to be valid, a guaranty must be made in writing from company management.

3.2   The Customer has no rights to the surrender or delivery of the source code. We shall render our performance in accordance with the state of technology at the time the Agreement was concluded. The scope of performance of the software is derived from the current description of the software in question. Unavailable software features which extend beyond this scope of performance do not entitle the Customer to withhold payments unless the availability of these features was previously assured by us in writing.

3.3   The software is legally protected. Copyrights, patents, trademarks and all other ancillary rights to the software as well as to other objects which we provide or make available to the Customer in the context of contract negotiations and execution remain our exclusive property in the relationship of the parties. If the rights belong to third parties, we have corresponding exploitation rights.

3.4   The Customer purchases the software for internal purposes (basic usage right) for his own perpetual use. To exercise the usage right, the Customer receives the computer program in object version on a computer-readable medium or via remote data transmission, as well as the documentation and installation instructions. Usage may not exceed the number of workplaces stipulated in the Agreement. We hereby grant the Customer the program rights that are necessary for its usage, as well as the right to copy the program to memory and hard disks, and the right to correct errors. The Customer may make backup copies of the program that are deemed necessary for secure operation. These copies shall be marked as such and provided with copyright identification of the original data media. Copyright notices may neither be removed, altered nor covered. The user manual may only be copied for internal use within the Customer’s company. The Customer must inform us in writing of any subsequent changes to installation locations.

3.5     Upon transfer of the software, we are entitled to hand over a temporary, executable program version, together with the undertaking to make the unlimited license key available immediately after payment of all fees, etc. that become due after the software has been transferred.

3.6   Redistribution of the software (in whole or in part) to a third party, in particular by renting, lending or distribution in any tangible or intangible form, is not permitted without our prior written consent. This consent is given under the following conditions:

3.6.1     The Purchaser shall deliver to the third parties (if any) the original disks, destroy all copies, especially on disks in hard drives or storage, cease usage totally and confirm in writing the performance of such obligations.

3.6.2     The third party shall provide us with written notification that it shall adhere to the provision of this Agreement, and particularly those in this Section 3.

3.6.3     There are no salient grounds for objections.

3.7   The right to decompile the software is granted only subject to the conditions of § 69 e Section 1, paragraphs 1-3 of the German Copyright Act and § 69 e Section 2, paragraphs 1 to 3 of the German Copyright Act.

3.8   Construction or design modifications arising from technology improvements or required by law shall remain reserved during the delivery period, insofar as the article of sale is not considerably modified and any modifications are deemed reasonable for the Customer.

4      Delivery

4.1   The delivery requires the timely and proper fulfillment of the obligation of the Customer. Defences based on non-performance of the contract are reserved.

4.2   In case of default in acceptance or other breach of duties to cooperate by the Customer we are entitled to claim any resulting damage including but not limited to additional expenses, if any. Further damages are reserved. In this case, the risk of loss or damage to the goods passes to the Customer at the time of such default or breach of duty to cooperate.

4.3   Human Solutions reserves the right to perform partial deliveries or services, insofar as deemed reasonable for the Customer.

5      Prices, Payment

5.1   Our prices are ex-works, plus the statutory VAT and excluding the costs of packing, unless otherwise expressly agreed. Invoices are payable without deduction within 14 days of the date of the invoice. During maintenance and care services the remuneration for each calendar year will be issued in advance invoices.

5.2   Price changes are permitted in cases where more than four months have expired between the close of purchase and the agreed-upon delivery date. In the case of subsequent increases (until completion of delivery) in wages, material costs or the standard market purchasing costs, we are entitled to increase our prices commensurate with such cost increases. The Customer may withdraw from the Agreement only if the aforesaid price increases more than moderately exceeds the increase in the general cost of living.

5.3    Any additional services demanded by the Customer (e.g., consultancy and support during program installation) shall be invoiced in accordance with our current price list.

5.4   In the case of any delay in payment, we shall have the right to suspend delivery until payment has been made.

5.5   Overdue payments are at an interest rate of nine per cent per annum above the current base interest rate. We retain the right to claim further default damages.

5.6   Any set-off by the Customer is permitted only with undisputed or legally established counterclaims. The same applies to the retention rights of the Customer.

5.7   With continued obligation agreements (such as care & maintenance) we may adjust the prices (e.g. the maintenance fee) annually to match the general price trend. Such increase will become effective at the beginning of the new contract year. Should these adjustments result in a price increase of more than 4%, the Customer may terminate the Agreement.

6      Passing of Risk

When shipping the goods at the Customer’s request, the risk of accidental loss and accidental deterioration of the goods passes to the Customer at the time of dispatch.

7      Customer Participation

7.1   The Customer will provide us with support for previously-agreed installation and training to the extent required. The Customer shall pass on the necessary information and documents and grant access to his business, if such access is required for installation work and training.

7.2   The Customer shall ensure that all spatial, technical, infrastructure and other setup and connection conditions required for system installation and start-up are in place.

8      Acceptance

8.1   Completed works must be accepted. The acceptance is validated by the signature of the Customer below the receipt form.

8.2   If the Customer does not sign the acceptance without delay, we may set a time limit of one week (in writing) for the Customer to do so. Acceptance shall be deemed to have taken place, if the Customer does not specify (in writing and within this period) the reasons for the refusal of the acceptance.

8.3   The Certificate of Acceptance shall list the results of system testing. If necessary, an agreement shall be made with the Customer on required repairs/improvements and a time for additional testing.

9      Training

We shall train the employees of the Customer in accordance with the contractual provisions. In the event of legitimate Customer dissatisfaction, we shall have the opportunity to remedy the situation.

10    Defects

10.1  The subject of the Agreement shall have the features and properties stipulated in the Agreement, shall be suitable for the otherwise standard usage stipulated in the conditions of the Agreement and shall be of standard quality for software of this type. Product descriptions without a separate written agreement shall not constitute a guarantee. Software errors resulting from hardware defects, environmental conditions or improper usage shall not be considered as defects. Insignificant deteriorations in quality will not be taken into account. In respect of updates, upgrades and the delivery of new versions, the warranty shall be limited to new features of the update, upgrade or new versions compared to the previous version release.

10.2.1 Purchase The Customer only has the right to replacement performance in the case of defect claims. Such replacement performance may consist of the repair of the defects or the replacement of the defective part. Subsequent performance may also take place through the delivery or installation of a new program version or a work-around. If the replacement performance fails or if we definitively refuse to execute subsequent performance, the Customer may cancel the contract or reduce the purchase price and, if we are responsible for the defect, claim compensation or reimbursement of the futile expenses incurred pursuant to Section 12. If the defect does not affect functionality, or only slightly affects it, we are entitled (to the exclusion of further warranty rights) to remedy the defect by providing a new version or an update in the context of version, update and upgrade planning. Prerequisite for any warranty claims, however, is that the Customer shall properly fulfill its duties regarding inspection obligations and its duty to give notice of defects pursuant to § 377 of the German Commercial Code.

10.2.2 Rent If the subject of the Agreement has defects, and those defects detract not immaterially from its contractual use, the Customer (if it has complied with its duty to report defects) has the right to a reduction of rent and to damages, and the right to demand the remedying of such defects from us without prejudice to the Customer’s legal claims. We may provide a replacement instead of taking remedial measures. The Customer may terminate the Agreement without notice if defects are not remedied by us, or if we do not deliver replacements.

10.2.3 Contract for work and services (software development, installation and other contractual work services). In the case of defective performance in software development or other contractual work services, the Customer may demand replacement performance from us within a reasonable time. If replacement performance fails, the Customer (with respect to the software development or other additional services) may demand to cancel the Agreement or have the price reduced and, if we are responsible for the defect in question, demand damages or compensation for his futile expenditure from us, pursuant to Section 12.

10.2.4 Care and Maintenance We accept no responsibility for correction of the error. In case of defective performance in maintenance or care, the Customer may demand replacement performance from us within a reasonable time. If replacement performance fails, the Customer may terminate the care or maintenance agreement without notice or reduce the monthly care or maintenance fee and, if we are responsible for the defect, claim compensation or reimbursement of futile expenses incurred pursuant to Section 12. Replacement performance may also take place through the delivery or installation of a new program version or a work-around. Licensed product services for a release that is no longer maintained by us are not included in our Customer support services.

10.3 The warranties are waived if the Customer or third party improperly installs, uses, cares for, maintains or repairs the subject of the Agreement, or if the ambient conditions required by the manufacturer are not complied with. The Customer is free to prove that these circumstances are not the cause of the defect. In the case of software, the warranty obligation is also void if original labels or ID markings are changed.

11    Rights in Case of Defects in Title

11.1 We guarantee that the contractual usage of the subject of the Agreement by the Customer does not infringe upon the rights of any third party. In the case of defects, we guarantee (at the Customer’s discretion) that we shall provide a legally sound usage method for the subject of the Agreement or for an equivalent subject of the agreement.

11.2  The Customer shall inform us immediately in writing if any third party makes infringement claims (e.g., copyright or patent rights) against it. The Customer grants us the right to conduct any legal actions against said third party on our own account. If the Customer makes use of this authorization, the Customer may not itself recognize the claims of any third party without our consent. We shall contest claims by third parties at our own expense and release the Customer from the payment of all costs connected with contesting these claims, insofar as the claims are not occasioned by conduct of the Customer in violation of his obligations (e.g. the use of software programs in violation of the contract).

11.3  Liability is governed by the terms stipulated in Section 12; the statute of limitations is governed by the terms stipulated in Section 14.

12    Liability / Damages

12.1 We pay damages or compensation for futile expenses to the following extent, regardless of the legal basis:

12.1.1   The liability for intent, gross negligence and warranty shall be unlimited.

12.1.2   In the case of gross negligence of other vicarious agents, we shall be liable for damages typical for this type of agreement and which were foreseeable at the time of the conclusion of the Agreement.

12.1.3   We shall be liable for losses caused by any breach of our primary obligations and by our legal representatives or vicarious agents. Primary obligations are the basic duties which form the essence of the Agreement. Such duties were decisive for the conclusion of the Agreement and for the performance of which the Customer may rely. If we violate these primary obligations through simple negligence, liability is limited to the amount that was foreseeable at the time of the performance in question.

12.1.4   We have unlimited liability for intentional or negligent damages caused from injury to life, limb or health. We are liable for product liability damages in accordance with the regulations in the product liability law.

12.1.5   We are liable for damages caused by the absence of guaranteed features up to the amount covered by the purpose of the assurance and which was apparent to us at the time of the issue of the assurance.

12.2  The option of claiming contributory negligence remains open to us. The Customer has in particular the obligation to carry out data backup and to prevent any unauthorized third party access (esp. protection against viruses, Trojan-type viruses or similar) in accordance with current, state-of-the-art technology. Liability for loss of data shall be limited to the typical amount of effort involved in the data restoration, which also would have applied in the case of the regular and risk-pertinent manufacture of backup copies.

13    Rights to work results/Copyrights

13.1  We hereby grant the Customer non-exclusive, ordinary right of use for the software. Content and portability of this right of use are based on the provisions contained in paragraphs 3.4, 3.5 and 3.6.

13.2  The Customer shall immediately provide us with all relevant information about any inventions or other patentable results that arise in connection with the execution of the Agreement. All inventions shall be transferred to us. We reserve all rights in respect of any subsequent patentable rights. If we have no interest in registering an invention for patent, we shall retransfer the invention to the Customer, whereby an ordinary, royalty-free and unrestricted right of use remains for us.

14      Statutory Limitations

14.1  The statute of limitations shall be deemed to be:

14.1.1 one year from delivery of the subject of the Agreement for claims for repayment of purchase price arising from withdrawal or reduction; however, not less than three months from submittal of the legally binding declaration of withdrawal or reduction;

14.1.2 one year for other claims arising from defects;

14.1.3 one year for claims arising from infringement, provided said infringement does not pertain to a third party, on the basis of which the third party can demand the return of the subject of the Agreement;

14.1.4 one year for other claims for damages or compensation for futile expenditure, beginning from the time at which the Customer becomes aware of the circumstances which give rise to the claim or would, in the absence of gross negligence, have found out about such circumstances.

The statute of limitations shall take effect at the latest upon expiration of the limits set forth in § 199 of the German legal code (BGB).

14.2  For damages and compensation claims arising from willful acts, gross negligence, guarantees, bad faith and the cases specified in paragraph 14.2, all legal statute of limitations provisions shall apply at all times.

15      Confidentiality

The parties agree that their contractual relationship may provide them with access to information that is confidential for the other party (“Confidential Information”). Confidential information is limited to the subject of the Agreement and to any information that is clearly identified by one of the parties as confidential. The parties agree that confidential information (a) shall be kept secret for an unlimited period; (b) shall not be made accessible in any form to third parties (other than those of their employees or consultants who are subject to the obligation of non-disclosure) and (c) shall not be used for purposes other than those provided for in this Agreement.

16      Term and Termination

16.1 Term and termination deadlines arise from continued obligation agreements which pertain to the respective individual agreements.

16.2 The right to terminate the Agreement for good cause remains unaffected. Grounds for such termination include

16.2.1 an application for the opening of insolvency proceedings over the assets of the other party has been made or

16.2.2 insolvency proceedings over the assets of the other party have been opened or such opening was rejected for lack of assets or

16.2.3 an affidavit has been or is being declared for the assets of the Customer.

Grounds for termination for us are also

16.2.4 if the Customer or its successor, despite repeated reminders with reasonable grace, does not meet, or fully meet its payment obligations

16.2.5 if facts become known that the Customer is involved in sufficiently-founded suspicions of criminal activity, especially any criminal offense for fraud, embezzlement, bankruptcy offenses, offenses against the competition, the granting of favors, the receiving of bribes, bribery, corruption, etc.

16.3 The provisions of paragraphs 13 and 15 shall survive termination of this Agreement.

17    Other Provisions

17.1  The transfer of rights and obligations under the Agreement concluded with us require written consent to become valid; however, § 354 a of the HGB shall remain unaffected.

17.2  Regarding purchasing, we shall retain title to the delivered goods until receipt of all payments from the entire business relationship. Until transfer of ownership has taken place, the Customer shall undertake to handle the article of sale with all due care. In case of breach of contract by the Customer, in particular through default of payment, we have the right, at the expense of the Customer, to demand the return of the purchase item, or all copies of the licensed product for which we have retained the property rights, or if applicable, to demand the assignment of the licensee’s (the Customer’s) right of return against third parties. In this case and upon request, the Customer shall confirm in writing that it has not retained any copies of the licensed product(s) and that all installations of the licensed product(s) have been permanently deleted from the system of the Customer or that of the third party. Before the final transfer of ownership, the Customer shall require our prior written consent to receive the rights to the licensed product.

17.3   We are entitled to refer to the (brand) name/corporate name of the Customer (with company address, where applicable) and the company logo/brand of the Customer on the website under the Customers/References section, and in connection with the presentation of the service portfolio (e.g. in PowerPoint presentations and demos) in order to point out the joint economic relationship in the case of press reports.

We undertake to use the company name and the logo of the customer exclusively for the purposes mentioned in sentence 1. Any further use is excluded.

17.4  Verbal agreements are not part of this contract. Modifications and additional provisions are effective only if agreed in writing. This also applies to agreements which abolish the written requirement.

17.5  If a provision is or becomes invalid, this shall not affect the validity of the remaining provisions.

17.6  We are entitled to employ sub-contractors to perform any of the agreed contractual obligations.

17.7  The laws of the Federal Republic of Germany shall apply exclusively with the exception of the UN Sales Convention (CISG), even if the Customer has its headquarters abroad.

17.8  For all disputes arising from the contractual relationship, the Customer shall agree that our headquarters shall be the place of jurisdiction, if the Customer is a registered trader, a legal entity or a special assets fund under public law or if the Customer has no place of domicile in the Federal Republic of Germany at the time legal proceedings are started. We are also entitled to sue at the headquarters of the Customer.

What will drivers actually do while their vehicles are being driven autonomously? And how will changes in the driver’s activities affect the vehicle interior, safety and comfort? To answer questions like these, the functions and capabilities of existing digital manikins must be expanded. Human Solutions GmbH, Simi Reality Motion Systems GmbH and the Department of Ergonomics at the Technical University of Munich will be conducting a joint research project on these and other related questions over the next three years.

On July 1, 2018, the INSAA research project (vehicle occupant simulation in automated automobiles) was launched with the aim of further developing the RAMSIS digital human model to meet the requirements of automated driving for the driver. “In the vehicle industry, the classic driver’s seat is currently being optimized for the ergonomic execution of the driving task, primarily with the aid of digital manikins,” says Project Coordinator Dr. Hans-Joachim Wirsching of Human Solutions. This will also change the interior of the vehicle – and these changes must take ergonomic issues into account.”

RAMSIS, the digital manikin by Human Solutions, has been used for the ergonomic design of vehicle interiors for the past 30 years – and it has so far been geared towards the primary driving task in conventional vehicle concepts, with the focus on comfort issues and on safety aspects like belt routing and visual field analyses. “We intend to expand the capabilities of RAMSIS through the INSAA project. In future, the postures and movements of RAMSIS will also include activities outside the vehicle, such working with a tablet,” explains Philipp Russ, CEO of Simi Reality Motions Systems. “To achieve this, we’ll be carrying out tests during which real occupant behavior is recorded with several cameras, and thereby measured in a contact-free manner. The results will then be transferred to RAMSIS.”

Exactly how the interior of automobiles will look in the future is still uncertain: “Various concepts are conceivable today. The degree of automation of a vehicle specifies the degree to which the occupants are involved in driving, and consequently the activities that can be carried out during the journey. In our research project, we will be focusing on enabling the use of the digital manikin to ergonomically test and validate these concepts,” says Professor Klaus Bengler of the Technical University of Munich.

This means, for example, that RAMSIS will ensure that all instruments which are relevant for the occupants are clearly visible and accessible in the future. Safety aspects such as belt routing will also be re-addressed to take the changes in the vehicle interior into account.

Human Solutions, experts and market leaders in digital ergonomics, and Design Rule, a leading provider of end-to-end digital manufacturing solutions, have today announced their UK partnership naming Design Rule as the sole supplier of RAMSIS in the UK.

Developed by Human Solutions, RAMSIS is the world’s leading 3D CAD manikin. It realistically simulates vehicle occupants and analyses the ergonomics of interiors, allowing you to ensure a high level of product maturity and already save on physical prototypes during the early development of your products on the CAD model.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Human Solutions to provide RAMSIS in the UK.” Commented Adam Bannaghan, Operations Director at Design Rule. “We already work extensively with leading manufacturers to ensure optimal product enhancement at every step of the product lifecycle, from concept through to design, production and beyond – and RAMSIS works seamlessly with the product suite we provide.”

Design Rule’ existing customers are reaping the benefits of utilising digital solutions in the design stage – but predicting how a customer experiences an interior environment has always been difficult before an actual physical product is produced. RAMSIS’ ability to effectively analyse the ergonomics of any interior by realistically simulating a range of potential occupants solves that issue, giving manufacturers far greater earlier insight into their product from the design phase and ultimately reducing the time to market and overall cost.

“Whether in aircrafts, trains, cars, boats, planes or trucks, the vehicle occupants’ perception and experience will directly affect the success of your product. RAMSIS gives you a much greater digital view of this than any other solution available today. This solution should be essential for any company involved in vehicle interior design”, comments Adam Bannaghan.

With its digital manikin RAMSIS, Human Solutions is the world market leader for ergonomic analyses in vehicles and state of the art technology. “We are looking forward to our partnership with Design Rule. I am confident that together we will succeed in raising companies' awareness of vehicle ergonomics and thus contributing to greater safety and comfort for the drivers and occupants”, says Susanne Kiel, Senior Manager Partner Sales at Human Solutions.

A soldier must be able to move freely and react fast to all kinds of situations – despite bulky protective clothing and equipment. This is why the interior design must be perfect in the tight spaces inside the vehicle, because just a few millimeters can become a safety factor. The digital manikin RAMSIS – now ready for use in military vehicles.

RAMSIS is a digital manikin used worldwide by leading car manufacturers for the optimal ergonomic design of vehicle interiors – and it can now enter and exit a vehicle in full combat gear, equipped with the most important, up-to-date army equipment. This provides vehicle designers with information on the ergonomic requirements of the occupants at an early stage of development, ensuring shorter development times and reducing the costs for late modifications to the vehicle.

“Ergonomics simulation with RAMSIS Defense provides vehicle designers with the practical relevance they need to precisely analyze and design functionality in the vehicle,” says Anton Preiß, Director Mobility at Human Solutions. “Our manikin can be realistically equipped with protective clothing and equipment. This means that posture, force and consequently the analysis results correspond to actual use.” The limited space available in the vehicle and the additional restrictions of protective clothing and equipment are taken into account at an early stage. “The high degree of practical relevance was very important to us. The RAMSIS Defense module was developed in cooperation with the German Armed Forces and is aimed specifically at ergonomic simulation in emergency vehicles,” says Anton Preiß.

Plan space requirements and posture realistically

RAMSIS behaves according to the equipment attached and/or worn: In real life, clothing can restrict the mobility of individual body parts – boots can restrict ankle movements, for example, and if a soldier is wearing a helmet, his posture in the vehicle changes because he has to lower his head. These restrictions are automatically addressed in RAMSIS, so the simulation results are especially realistic.

3D equipment library with realistic features

The core of RAMSIS Defense is the integrated equipment library. The most important items of the current equipment of German soldiers such as combat jacket and pants, boots, protective vest, helmet and the newly-introduced electronic back were digitized with 3D scanners and integrated into the equipment library. The RAMSIS Manikin can be equipped as required to suit the intended use.

The world’s pioneer of vehicle occupant safety acquires the world’s leader in human ergonomic digital design.

The Humanetics Group, the global leader in safety testing and developer of biofidelic crash test dummies, software modeling and custom sensor solutions, is pleased to announce the acquisition of Human Solutions GmbH and Avalution GmbH, leaders in virtual ergonomic design software. Through the acquisition, Humanetics adds critical tools used by vehicle designers around the globe to develop interior environments for occupants that are safe, comfortable and ergonomically pleasing. Human Solutions and Avalution will continue to be led by the current management team from their headquarters in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and satellite offices in Munich and Cary, North Carolina.

For nearly 20 years, Human Solutions has led the mobility sector as the market standard for virtual ergonomics design through its RAMSIS software. Avalution is a specialist in 3D body scanning and has the largest international database of human body dimensions and shapes. The combined tools are used by most major vehicle manufacturers, aerospace companies and defense groups. By leveraging its proprietary Avalution database containing over 100,000 custom body scans from around the globe, the RAMSIS software allows users to create virtual vehicle interiors and custom 3D CAD avatars that realistically simulate vehicle occupants to evaluate ergonomic and comfort parameters during the early stage of prototype development. Both are also used in the fashion industry, sports equipment and helmet design, and uniform and industrial clothing designers to ensure sizing is adapted for a broad range of body types and humans of all sizes.

Chris O’Connor, President and CEO of Humanetics Group, said “We are thrilled to welcome Human-Solutions and Avalution to the Humanetics Group. There is a very natural complimentary synergy in our solutions, customers, and capabilities. Both companies share a unique purpose that puts humans at the center of design and innovation. Both companies create highly sophisticated models of human bodies that enable engineers to design vehicles that keep humans safe, in proper position and in full control of the vehicle at critical moments in the driving experience.”

What will the future bring?

“Bringing safety and ergonomics design and testing validation together is revolutionary. In the next 10 years our customers have a huge challenge to launch more electric vehicles with more advanced levels of semi-autonomous driving. We will help them accelerate their speed to market with our simulation models and validate their vehicles with physical testing and integration of safety and ergonomics together in a turn-key offering. With the largest global database of scanned bodies, we can help improve the equitable safety and comfort for all occupants. And with the Humanetics Group global footprint we can offer local support to RAMSIS in every market around the world,” added O’Connor.

The founder of Human Solutions and Avalution, Dr. Andreas Seidl, will continue to lead both companies as Managing Director. “For us, the integration into the Humanetics family of companies is the logical result of our ongoing corporate strategy”, noted Dr Andreas Seidl. “We have successfully completed several joint projects in the past together, so we are confident in the synergies of our expertise and cultures. By joining forces, we can maximize the value of our data and ergonomic expertise and make it available for other areas of vehicle development in the future, such as autonomous driving, which entails entirely different occupant requirements for a vehicle."

Jeff Lewis, Chief Commercial Officer of Humanetics Group commented, “By adding these critical ergonomics design tools, we will be better able to address the increased risk of injury of many occupant groups of different gender, height, weight and age. This is not simply a marginal improvement – that is a paradigm shift in safety design. It will enable OEMs to maximize comfort, ergonomics and safety for a broader range of occupants. Further, with these developments we will bring the power of machine learning and simulation to the heart of equitable safety in transport. This will enable our customers to develop vehicles that further reduce injuries especially among more vulnerable occupants.”

The acquisition does not include the sister companies of Human Solutions and Avalution - Assyst GmbH, AVM GmbH and Sistemi Assyst (Lainate/Italy) - which will remain independent.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

From the end of June, users of the Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform will be able to use the digital human model RAMSIS from Human Solutions directly for designing vehicle interiors. The RAMSIS NextGen plug-in is available to order now for the 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA R2020x release and will begin shipping at the end of June.

The Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform enables businesses to reach operational excellence. It allows everyone involved in a project – from the research lab to the factory to the consumer – to interact and work together. As a result, it empowers businesses to design and test consumer experiences, from the idea to market delivery and usage, before actually producing them. RAMSIS is the world’s leading ergonomics tool for the automotive industry when it comes to customizing the interior of vehicles to match the requirements of the driver and passengers as closely as possible. "Thanks to the seamless integration and digital continuity of RAMSIS, we are now giving designers on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform a tool with which they can incorporate ergonomic requirements directly into their design when designing vehicle interiors," says Anton Preiß, Director Ergonomics at Human Solutions GmbH. The biggest advantage for users is that there is no need to import or export data, and work steps can be carried out more quickly and easily. At the same time, work is carried out in the familiar CAD environment. Compatibility between RAMSIS NextGen Standalone, RAMSIS NextGen in CATIA V5 and RAMSIS NextGen in 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA is also guaranteed.

No external data exchange needed

In practice, this means in concrete terms: platform users perform ergonomic analyses for vehicle design directly in 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA, based on the latest geometry, without having to exchange data with an additional standalone application. The integration also includes the use of 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA, the leading solution for all design and engineering activities, especially in the transportation and mobility industry. Designers and engineers thus benefit from the integrated-modeling environment to design, evaluate and validate the best result for their customers.

RAMSIS based on real three-dimensional scans

RAMSIS NextGen is integrated. This RAMSIS version offers the optimum in flexibility, efficiency and representation of the market. Users can obtain results more quickly by viewing several RAMSIS models in parallel – for example, people with different body shapes and sizes can easily be placed virtually in the vehicle interior to obtain information about the accessibility of various elements in the car, visibility or seatbelt routing. The body shapes of the models were developed on the basis of real, three-dimensional scans.

Every year, the RAMSIS Excellence Award is presented to the best young scientists working on ergonomics in vehicles – the application deadline is July 1, 2019!

Mobility determines our lives. We humans spend a lot of time in vehicles every day. Whether in the car, in a plane, on a train or on two wheels – designing interiors to meet the requirements of the human body are important safety and comfort factors. RAMSIS is the leading digital manikin by the Human Solutions GmbH. It is used worldwide for the interior design of vehicles, making sure that the vehicle ergonomics are perfect for driver and passengers.

For more than ten years now, Human Solutions GmbH has been organizing this competition for talented young people and scientists. “The RAMSIS Excellence Award brings fresh scientific impetus to our RAMSIS User Conference, which is attended by the employees of numerous international vehicle manufacturers who use our RAMSIS ergonomics tool,” says Dr. Andreas Seidl, CEO of Human Solutions GmbH. “The winners will take part in our conference, enabling them to gain a realistic insight into the working world. They also present their projects there and make valuable contacts in the industry.”

What kind of projects can be entered?

The focal themes of submitted projects and theses should pertain to vehicle design in the broadest sense of the word – but they may also address the cognitive assimilation and processing of information, the processing of anthropometrical topics and the analysis of comfort and driver models. The analysis projects should preferably be carried out using the RAMSIS ergonomics tool (e.g. mirror configuration for a specific vehicle), but this is not compulsory. The RAMSIS Excellence Award is aimed at students, doctoral students and scientific staff whose work deals with vehicle interior and cockpit design in the broadest sense of the term. Projects in German or English will be accepted.

What are the prizes that will be awarded?

The REA is presented for the best scientific work in each of two categories: €1,000 will be awarded for the best doctoral thesis and the best scientific project from young science students or graduates (master’s degree, bachelor’s degree or thesis) will receive €500.

Who chooses the winners?

An interdisciplinary jury with representatives from science and industry will adjudge the rankings of the submitted entries. In addition to addressing the scientific standard, the jury will particularly focus on the degree of technical applicability, the relevance to practice and the degree of innovation.

Deadline for applications and the award ceremony

The deadline submission date for entries is July 1, 2019. The prize-giving ceremony for the winners will take place during the annual RAMSIS User Conference. Participation in the RAMSIS User Conference and the willingness to present your own project there is presupposed with the submission of your application. More information and participation documentation can be found here.

Efficient Design of Belt Systems with the RAMSIS Seat Belt Design Suite of Modules

Better belt ergonomics   Compliance with standards = less time and reduced costs   Increased safety

At an early stage of development, RAMSIS Seat Belt Design ensures that your belt systems are optimized in accordance with ergonomic aspects, that standards are complied with and that safety is increased thanks to the correct functioning of the belt. Digital ergonomics also brings economic advantages to the development stage, since computer simulation eliminates many development steps and time-consuming physical tests – and that means significant time and cost savings.

When a vehicle becomes a workplace, it’s well worth making high demands on its ergonomic design. After all, a long working day in the driver’s cab is all about safety, health and as much comfort as possible. In the Fritzmeier booth at the BAUMA in Munich (Hall A6, Booth 327) from April 8 to 11, 2019, Human Solutions will show visitors how the world’s leading digital manikin RAMSIS is used in the development of construction machinery and vehicles.

With RAMSIS, machines can be designed in such a way that they can be fully controlled and monitored at an early stage of development. “This is an important safety aspect, because the machine itself will reduce the risk of costly damage, accidents at work and loss of production if ergonomic requirements have already been taken into account at an early design stage,” says Dr. Andreas Seidl, CEO of the Human Solutions Group.

Ensuring high process quality

RAMSIS also offers important advantages for product development. Thanks to ergonomic analysis at the computer model, you save time and money and ensure high process quality at the same time – because tests carried out with RAMSIS are not weather-dependent, so you can repeat your results at any time and compare the ergonomic aspects of different design options.

The RAMSIS Industrial Vehicles module can be used for ergonomic simulation in construction & heavy machines and in agricultural vehicles. Even as early as the strategy and concept stage, RAMSIS will give you all the solutions to issues that could affect product quality in terms of the comfort and safety of the driver and the operability of the vehicle. When it comes to compliance with visual standards, for example, a separate module ensures that the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulation (StVZO) §35b and the International Standard Organisation (ISO) 5006 standards are addressed at an early stage, especially for construction machinery. “RAMSIS displays the visual fields geometrically in the CAD model, facilitating standard-compliant development by performing checks and corrections on the digital vehicle model,” says Dr. Seidl.

Reproducible ergonomic results

The results of your ergonomic studies can be easily reproduced and transferred to other vehicle models. Thanks to RAMSIS’ virtual ergonomics control, you prevent costly, subsequent developments after the design phase has been completed. Planning and concept errors are prevented and the level of market readiness is well above average as a result, even before the first production series is ready to roll.

Human Solutions will be pleased to welcome you at the BAUMA booth of the Fritzmeier Group (Hall A6, Booth 327).

    Anthropometry

RAMSIS – Definition of Anthropometric Types

In the past, the discussion of body measurements as related to design requirements was frequently reduced to the consideration of just stature. This has the big advantage that the complicated analysis and consideration of multi dimensional statistical variables was cut down to a one dimensional problem.
Evidently, for many design problems this reduction to the one dimensional case is not adequate. This is why Human Solutions has developed a special anthropometric typology for RAMSIS.
This RAMSIS typology is based on the fact that the full anthropometric variability of a population can be condensed very efficiently down to the “key dimensions”

    • body height
    • ratio of sitting height over body height ("proportion") and
    • waist circumference.

The document explains the definition process of the RAMSIS typology and provides application examples for ergonomic analyses.

RAMSIS Aircraft meets all these complex requirements and implements them, realistically simulating the posture and movement of pilots, flight crew, passengers and workers in digital design. You can meet the requirements for interior aircraft design perfectly – without the need for any physical mock-ups.

Perfect seat ergonomics with the RAMSIS Seat Design Modules

Ergonomic seat design   Human/Seat interaction  Ergonomics limit values

Seat height and seat position influence ergonomics in the vehicle. That’s why we created the RAMSIS Seat Design module – to enable ergonomic seat design in vehicles. RAMSIS shows how the customer wants to sit in the vehicle and RAMSIS Seat Design shows how the seat supports him. Thanks to this detailed knowledge of the effects of seat positioning on comfort/discomfort, reachability and vision, the suitability of a vehicle for the entire defined target group can be ensured at an early stage.

Anthropometry so product design works for every body

The data from Avalution is used for the design of uniforms and PPE for women operating in critical environments like doctors, surgeons, firefighters, police and soldiers. For many years women have had  to use poor fitting equipment like bullet-proof vests, gun holsters, helmets and combat boots, that were scaled down versions of the unisex design. Women already play a vital role in these forces, despite using poorly fitting equipment, but we do now work with many groups from around the world to address the needs of women who take on these critical roles.

VISIBLE WOMEN - Celebrating International Womens Month!

We are celebrating International Women’s Month at Human Solutions by highlighting the many ways our data is used in product design to make women truly visible. As Caroline Criado Perez points out, in her book “Invisible Women”, the lack of women’s representation in design still persists in many products and designs. All too often critical equipment and protective clothing – and every day clothing, vehicles and building design is engineered around the scaled down hands, feet and body frames of a default human (man) – at the expense of women’s safety, comfort and protection.

Our anthropometric data and simulation software is already used by many of the world’s greatest companies. Name a car maker, and they are probably use our data. However, when you find instances of structural bias in product design – and as you know the bias is everywhere - you can tell people where they can come to ensure that women are visible in every product design.

    Posture Simulation

    RAMSIS – Posture Prediction Models

A great variety of ergonomic questions such as reach, visibility, operating ability etc. require the analysis of posture and position of the human operator relative to his environment. Therefore, precise knowledge of the posture to be expected depending on body dimensions, surrounding geometry and operation task is necessary.
This is why RAMSIS offers a function for posture simulation, i. e. automatic calculation of postures relating to defined tasks. The indispensable correspondence to reality is guaranteed by a so-called posture model.
Starting from a special posture model for car drivers, meanwhile Human Solutions has developed a variety of special posture models for specific application areas.
The document provides background information about the definition process of posture models as well as a comprehensive overview of all posture models which are currently available.

“Throwing a switch in your head”

Some ask the question, “What’s the use of ergonomics if the automobile drives itself anyway?” The answer lies in the transition between driver attention and relaxed entertainment in the vehicle – because there shouldn’t even be a couple of seconds between the relaxed entertainment and the attentive driving phases. Professor Bengler and Christian Müller discuss the new tasks of ergonomics.

    Egonomic Analysis

RAMSIS Vision Simulation – Functions and Basic Data

For humans the visual sense is by far the most important channel for acquiring information. This makes vision analysis an aspect of particular importance for the ergonomic quality of products and workplaces – with no distinction between direct and indirect vision.
This is why RAMSIS provides users with an extensive set of vision-related simulation and analysis functions. Vision obstructions can be detected and analyzed visually by switching the view to the manikin’s perspective or geometrically by calculating vision cones and hidden surface segments. A powerful mirror simulation function allows for defining mirrors of arbitrary curvature and shape including the mirror kinematics.
Of course, all of these functions require precise posture prediction including the manikin’s vision direction to gain strength and reliability. This is why vision-related experiments have always been an integrated part of the RAMSIS R&D project.
This document provides a concise overview about both, the vision-related posture experiments for RAMSIS and the vision analysis functionality of the RAMSIS software.
